Chapel of Santo António da Grota

Chapel of Santo António da Grota

The chapel is located within the walls of the Monte Brasil fortress and was part of the Quinta de Regalo (Leisure Estate), a recreational area created on the eastern hillside of Monte Brasil facing Angra by the then Spanish Governor, Gonçalo Mexia, circa 1615. The house of the Quinta de Regalo, Casa de Regalo, still exists as well, but the estate has disappeared. The festivities to Saint Anthony originated pilgrimages to the chapel and included, during some periods, powder shots from small pieces of artillery from two decorative bastions whose remains can still be seen.
