The Império do Espírito Santo da Ladeira Branca is located in the parish of Santa Luzia, municipality of Angra do Heroísmo.
It was built at the beginning of the second quarter of the 20th century, in 1926. This brotherhood celebrates the cult of the Divine Holy Spirit on the 5th Sunday after Easter, that is, on the Sunday of the Procession of the Festivities of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres, which takes place in Ponta Delgada.
The feast of this brotherhood, like others of the same nature, in addition to the religious component, includes several initiatives of a profane nature. The festive program of the Irmandade da Ladeira Branca begins with the change of the crown from the brother’s house where the symbols of the Holy Spirit to the Empire are located, on the Sunday before the day of the feast. On this day, and throughout the week, the rosary is recited in the empire, at night, and all brothers and devotees of the Paraclete can participate in it.
From the middle of the week, and depending on the financial capacity of the commission of the empire, there are usually different cultural initiatives, such as foot dancing and singing, performances by popular music groups and guest artists, philharmonic concerts, the traditional slaughter pork, bazaar, auctions, festival and lighting, milk goat, among others.
On Friday, meat, bread and wine are distributed to the brothers of the empire who contributed with their donations for the feast.
On the day of the feast, leave the empire for the parish church of Santa Luzia, where the solemn coronation mass is celebrated, the procession of the Holy Spirit, accompanied by a philharmonic. After performing this liturgical act, the procession returns to the empire again and bread is distributed to the people present.
In the afternoon, in the middle of the festival, the brotherhoods are paid for by the brothers and, in the evening, there is usually a philharmonic concert or a performance by a group or guest artist and auctions. At the end of this day, the portfolios are extracted and the new commission is appointed for the following year.
The festive cycle of this brotherhood usually ends with two rope bullfights, one held the following Saturday next to the empire and another, on Sunday, in Canada Nova and Bairro Novo.
