The Irmandade do Império do Espírito Santo da Rua Nova, is located in the parish of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, located in Praça Dr. Souza Junior.
It is a property built in the last year of the 18th century, namely in 1799 and rebuilt after the 1980 earthquake.
This Empire celebrates the feast of the Divine Holy Spirit on the Sunday before the Feast of Nossa Senhora do Carmo.
Its managing bodies are an Administrative Board, elected for a period of 5 years, a Fiscal Council and the General Assembly, elected for a period of 3 years, as well as the Festivities Commission (also known as the Empire Commission), appointed for the period one year, by the outgoing commission.
This Brotherhood’s party, like the others, begins with the removal of the crown from the house of the brother who holds the insignia for the Empire, where the rosary is recited, at night, by all the people who want to participate in this religious act, during the week.
The festival program consists of initiatives of a religious and profane nature. The religious part remains unchanged every year, but the one referring to cultural initiatives has always been dependent on the funds acquired for its realization.
This Empire has always included in its festive program performances by various musical groups, singing, philharmonic concerts, auctions, etc.
However, in the nineties of the twentieth century, a memorable and sad accident occurred: one of the rockets thrown during the party did not explode and, as it fell to the ground, a child went to pick it up and it burst in his hands, causing him the loss of some fingers.
Since that date, the brothers of this Empire have done no more than change the crown, pray the rosary, coronation, celebrate a solemn mass in the parish church, pay the brotherhoods, extract the portfolios and appoint the new Commission for the following year by the outgoing one.
