Dr. Marcelino Moules Eco-Museum

The Dr. Marcelino Moules Eco-Museum House is in the parish of Cinco Ribeiras. The estate, which is more than two centuries old, has been restored and was inaugurated in October, 1994. The museum is part of a typical regional 16th century estate, which includes three main buildings: the house, a mill and a barn. The house is typical of the traditional rural houses in Terceira, with a kitchen with an oven to bake bread, a wood stove, a kneading tray, a huge stone water-cooling pot and pitcher, furniture (tables, chairs, cupboard, basin) and dishes from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century; the centre of the house, separated from the other rooms by wooden partitions, has a stone recess and slatted floor; and a bedroom furnished with a pine bed, chairs, a trunk and an iron wash stand. An attic room was built above the bedroom, which was also used as a place to sleep. Some agricultural equipment is kept in the mill (oxcarts, yokes, a plough, a grid, amongst other things) and also a loom. The inside of the barn has been modernised and serves as a kitchen and bar. The estate also has an outdoor patio, a pig sty, a chicken run and a small garden. It is a fine example of the typical rural estates in this area.
