São João Baptista Fortress

São João Baptista Fortress

At the suggestion of Isidoro de Almeida, the architect Tomaz Benedito de Pesaro designed this fortress in the Italian style. It was completed during the reign of King Sebastião from who it takes its name. This fort shows a new perspective in coastal defense, which is sensitive to and conscious of the new need to protect and serve the seaports. It could cross fire with São Benedito across the bay on the coast of Monte Brasil. Thursday of 1641, March 28, within the context of the revolt against the dominant Spanish presence, the fort was conquered by the Ordinance Company of Ribeirinha commanded by Manuel Jacques de Oliveira.
