Império do Espírito Santo da Casa da Ribeira

The Império do Espírito Santo da Casa da Ribeira, is located in the parish of Santa Cruz, municipality of Praia da Vitória, located in Largo de São João of the aforementioned Place.

Its construction dates back to the last quarter of the 19th century, to the year 1888.

This brotherhood celebrates the feast of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost and Trinity Sundays, the first and second bodos.

The feasts of the empire begin with the departure of the processions of the Holy Spirit, accompanied by a philharmonic, from the houses of the emperors to the church, where a sung mass is celebrated, with a coronation at the end.

At the end of this liturgical act, the processions move towards the empire, where the crowns and flags are deposited and the parish priest blesses the bread and wine, which are then distributed to all those present.

After the bodo, the emperors follow in procession with their guests to the Recreational Society of Casa da Ribeira, where they are served a meal/function consisting of soup, boiled meat and rump, and finishing with the traditional rice pudding.

In the afternoon, there is an arraial, where tables are set with various snacks, massa sovada, drained broad beans, lupins, wine and juices, which are served to those present, while they fraternize and socialize and the auctions of the offers are carried out, whose proceeds revert in favor of the empire.

At night, there is lighting, a bazaar and, when possible, a cultural initiative that could be the performance of a popular/traditional music group or an artist invited for this purpose by the commission.

During the bodos, Sundays are drawn and butlers are appointed for the following year.

The festivities in Espírito Santo usually end, whenever possible, with a rope bullfight at Casa da Ribeira.
