Império do Espírito Santo de São João de Deus

The Império do Espírito Santo de São João de Deus is located in the parish of Santa Luzia, in the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, located in the district of that parish.

Its construction dates back to the last quarter of the 19th century, namely to the year 1887.

It is, therefore, a centenary property that celebrates the cult of the Divine Holy Spirit on the so-called Sunday of the Trinity. The party program consists of two complementary parts: one of a religious nature and the other of a recreational/cultural nature. The richness and variety of activities that form the program of these festivities, especially those in the cultural area, depend, from year to year, on the budget available for this purpose.

Thus, the festivities in praise of the Divine Holy Spirit, promoted by this brotherhood, begin on the previous Sunday with the change of crown to the Empire and end on the Monday following Trinity Sunday. The program includes various activities, namely in the religious area, the daily recitation of the rosary, at night, in the empire, in which all people who wish to do so can participate and the festive coronation mass in the Chapel that is continuous with it.

In the ludic/cultural scope, there is the Pezinho, the Creators’ Supper, the Bodo de Leite, the distribution of alms, bodo and meat, musical performances, among other initiatives. On the Sunday of the feast, Trinity Day, in the evening, the appointment of the new commission and the extraction of portfolios for the following year take place.

The party ends the following day, Monday, with a rope bullfight.
