Império do Espírito Santo de São Luís

The Império do Espírito Santo de São Luís is located in the parish of São Bento, municipality of Angra do Heroísmo.

The construction date of this Empire goes back to the 19th century, to the year 1893. This Empire holds 32 crowns of the Holy Spirit and 7 flags. The celebration takes place on the “Sunday of Pentecost” and the “Holy Trinity”.

In the period that precedes the Sundays of the two coronations, the following take place: the “breeders’ supper”, the blessing and distribution of meat, massa sovada, wine, the daily prayer of the rosary, performances by folk groups, musical groups, from artists, vacadas and calves, to challenging singing with various singers/improvisers from Terceira Island, etc.

During these days, there are lighting and bazaar. On Sundays, the coronation processions leave the emperors’ houses accompanied by a philharmonic band and head to the parish church where the festive coronation mass is celebrated. On the afternoon of these Sundays (Pentecost and Trinidad) the butlers for the following year are appointed. On the Monday of the first bodo, the milk bodo takes place in the morning, followed by the traditional auctions. The 1st bodo festivities end on Tuesday with a rope bullfight in S. Luis.

On Monday of the second bodo, after working hours, the procession of offerings and the traditional milk bodo takes place, followed by the performance of musical groups. The festive program of the 2nd Bodo also ends with a rope bullfight in the place of S. Luis. The two bodos – Pentecost Sunday and Holy Trinity Sunday, take place in the same place and in the same empire. However, each has its own butlers and separate programs.
