Machado Fagundes Vulcanoespeleologic Museum
Since the organisation started up, the Montanheiros association has been closely involved with geological issues, as well as having a special appreciation for the unique formations and natural structures of volcanic caves. The first speleological expeditions resulted in the first geological samples, brought to light of day for scientific purposes, arousing people’s curiosity and attracting them to a cause which was taking its first steps. Eventually there were enough samples to form a collection worthy of display. Put together, over the decades, by the Associação Espeleológica Os Montanheiros, the collection is exhibited in the Machado Fagundes Museum, where one can see materials with different structures, resulting from the volcanic origin of the islands of the Azores; a 3D model of six of the nine islands; a xylotheque, or collection of wood; a collection of clays from Terceira; fossils; a huge collection of photographs of the landscapes of the Azores; and a map of the protected areas in the archipelago.
