The Império do Espírito Santo da Serra de Santiago, is located in the parish of Lajes, municipality of Praia da Vitória, located on the main road of that locality.
The date of its construction dates back to the third quarter of the 20th century, to the year 1964. This brotherhood celebrates the feast of the Divine Holy Spirit in the month of June on a variable date. The celebration of this brotherhood begins with the change of the crown from the butler’s house to the empire, on the Sunday before the coronation.
The procession is not accompanied by a philharmonic, but people sing during that route. Every day of the week, the rosary is recited in the empire and the brothers and other people who wish to do so will be able to participate in this pious act.
On Saturday, pensions are distributed among the brothers of the empire. These are made up of meat, bread and wine. On Sunday morning, the inhabitants of that place gather next to the empire to participate in the mass that is celebrated in the open air, in the empire’s bandstand.
At the end of this liturgical act, coronations are performed. That said, the procession of the Holy Spirit, accompanied by a philharmonic, travels through that place in the Serra de Santiago, until it reaches the place where a function/meal is held, in which the brothers of the empire participate.
Once this traditional meal is over, stewards are appointed for the next three years. Each commission has a three-year term.
