The Império do Espírito Santo do Corpo Santo, also known as Império da Caridade is located in the parish of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, located at the intersection of Rua do Cardoso and Rua Pero Anes do Canto, in the Bairro do Corpo Holy.
This Brotherhood was founded in the last quarter of the 19th century, in 1895, by Manuel Vieira Cardoso. It is, therefore, a century-old empire that celebrates its feast in honor of the Divine Holy Spirit on the fourth Sunday of June.
This cult begins with the change of the crown to the empire and the recitation of the rosary at night, during the period of festivities. During the week it is customary to have varied activities of a cultural nature, such as performances by musical groups of a different nature, the Supper of Creators and Benefactors of the Empire and singing to the challenge with several repentistas.
On the last days of the week, Friday and Saturday, the cutting and blessing of the meat and the distribution of alms, bread and wine to benefactors take place. The coronation is the high point of the festivities in honor of the Paraclete that take place in that empire. On the Sunday of the feast, in the morning, there is a concentration of children together with the Império da Caridade for the coronation, whose procession leaves towards the Hermitage of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem, where a mass is celebrated for the souls of the deceased brothers. That same day, at night, there is musical entertainment and the extraction of pills, followed by the nomination of the Festivities Commission for the following year.
Before the conclusion of the festival, which takes place on the following Saturday, with a rope bullfight, the so-called milk bodo takes place on the previous Tuesday, followed, normally, by the performance of a musical group hired for the purpose. .
