Império do Espírito Santo dos Remédios

The Império do Espírito Santo dos Remédios is located in the parish of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, on Rua Francisco de Ornelas (Bairro do Corpo Santo).

It was founded in 1909, in Largo dos Remédios, and then transferred, in 1959, to Rua Francisco Ornelas, next to the Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem. This brotherhood has a crown dating from 1850 and was founded by the Canto e Castro family.

It is a century-old brotherhood that celebrates its feast in honor of the Divine Holy Spirit on Trinity Sunday. This begins on that Sunday with the change of the crown to the empire where, at night, the rosary is recited during the week.

On one of the days, usually on Wednesday, the Supper of Creators and Benefactors of the Empire takes place. It is traditional for this meal to be a conger stew. It should be noted that, 40 years ago, this dinner was made with crab, lobster and chip, as this is a neighborhood of fishermen, who donated the shellfish they caught to the Divine.

The blessing of the meat and its distribution among the Benefactors of the Empire takes place on Friday. The coronation is the high point of the festivities in praise of the Paraclete, which take place in that empire.

On Saturday, which precedes the day of the feast, there is the distribution of alms and the recitation of the rosary in the empire, in which all those interested in this liturgical act can participate. After praying the rosary, it is customary to end the night with a cultural activity that usually consists of the performance of a musical group hired for this purpose.

On the Sunday of the feast, in the morning, there is a concentration of children next to the Império dos Remédios for the coronation, whose procession, accompanied by the Fanfare Operária Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral, leaves towards the Hermitage of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem, where mass is celebrated for the souls of deceased brothers.

Once this liturgical act is over, the coronation procession travels through some of the arteries of the Bairro do Corpo Santo, after which, a function in praise of the Divine Holy Spirit takes place, in the street in front of the Império, in which the general public can participate, consisting of soup, stew, rump, rice pudding, pasta sovada, bread, wine and juices. That same day, at night, there is musical entertainment and the extraction of pills, followed by the nomination of the Festivities Commission for the following year.

The following Monday, at night, the Bodo de Leite takes place, whose parade is held between the Império da Caridade and the Império dos Remédios, both based in this Bairro do Corpo Santo. The party on this day usually ends with a performance by a musical group.

The festivities of this brotherhood end with a rope bullfight on the following Saturday, in the afternoon.
